Chapter 6 - Bouncing Thoughts

You slowly turned to Ruby, sitting on the bed, staring. Your cheeks lit up again, not because of her.

    Velvet.

    Because of Velvet.

“Ruby,” you said slowly. “I'm gonna tell you what happened with Velvet because I trust you. Please, don't make me regret it. I need you to keep what I'm about to tell you between us and nobody else. Don't tell Weiss or Blake, don't even tell Yang. And especially don't tell Velvet.” Her eyes remained wide, the frown on her face opening. “I promise.” She said.

“Secondly, no jokes. This is serious, and I just don't want jokes about it. In fact I'm glad you're here because I need someone to talk to.” You told her. “Of course!” She responded in the serious tone you needed to hear. “If you need someone to bounce your thoughts off of, talk to me.” She patted the blankets on the bed next to her. “Come sit.” You slowly walked over, but it felt like you were floating. You barely felt yourself touch the ground. You lightly sat down next to Ruby, who looked up at you like a child observing their hero, but with a slightly open frown. The bed creaked slightly. “So, what happened? Is everything okay?” She asked with concern. “Oh, everything’s fine. Totally fine.” Her face slowly lit up. “Really? What happened?” You laughed, stuttering. “I honestly am not quite sure.” She laughed for a moment.

“Velvet said she'd call me earlier today, and she did. Eventually, we got to her coming over, to help me with my homework. We worked on that, but there was this… tension, in the air. We couldn't really keep our eyes off each other. We smiled a lot, like a lot. She and I blushed a ton, but the end was the best. We hugged goodbye, and it was perfect. I could have had her hold me for hours. I- I'm not sure how or what to feel, but I just can't stop thinking about, about her.”

Ruby relaxed her eyes, and smiled at you, almost in a joking manner.

    Almost.

She lifted her black-sleeved arm and put it on your shoulder. “(Y/n)...” she said slowly.

    “You like her.”

You looked up, almost not believing what you were hearing. You opened your mouth to speak, but then the purity of the time with Velvet came rushing back. The happiness of you both, the warmth of her hold. Her personality layer itself out in your head. She was sweet, and you recalled this from her hug and the talk from outside the cafeteria. She was kind, from her offering to help you with your work. She was funny, from her growing sense of humor. She was different from everybody else, from her being proud of being a Faunus and her different dress sense. But she cared about you, and a lot at that. She was concerned when you confronted Cardin, she wanted you to do well in your work, she called you on her own time, so many more things pointed exactly to her undeniable empathy towards you.

It seemed obvious why you felt this way. The absurdity of feeling this way after not even three days of knowing her became entirely irrelevant.

The feelings were there. The feelings were all that mattered.

“You can see it, can’t you?”

You snapped back to reality. You saw the room layer out in front of you. The homework on the desk, the folded beds, the light shining down. Ruby sitting next to you. But it all seemed, new. Vibrant. Bright. Pure. You turned to Ruby, her black hair almost shining from the ceiling’s lumination. Her brilliant silver eyes stared into your quivering (e/c) eyes, a soft smile resting at the bottom of her face. Her bright red cape sat behind her, hanging quietly from her pointy shoulders. It draped onto the bed, and spread itself to cover a portion of the bed’s darker red color.

“Yeah, I see it.” You responded, uncontrollably smiling ear to ear. She rubbed her pale hand up and down your back. “I'm glad.” You chuckled at what she said. “Me too.” She tilted her head slightly. “Well, what is it you like about her?” She inquired. You didn’t know where to start. “Um, well, for one thing, she’s really sweet. She’s nice…” You began.

“She’s… funny, she’s… Unique, she cares about me, I’ve never met anyone like her. She’s absolutely beautiful, she has the most adorable smile I’ve ever seen. I like the way she acts like she’s in her own world, but she’s always happy to let somebody else in. Her accent is adorable, her hair is pretty, she gives great hugs. She goes out of her way just to see me for a little while…” You trailed off.

    “Who wouldn’t like her?”

Ruby smiled silently, her eyes flickering. “Wow…” She whispered. “You really do like her.”

“I do.” You said just as quietly.

“Well, she is just as great as you described. You’ll be very lucky to have her. And her, you.” She said. You looked to her and asked “What should I do now? Tell her how I feel? How would I do that?” Ruby looked up and thought briefly for a moment. “Well, you have one of two ways you could do it.” You looked at her, confused. “What? What are the two ways?” Looking back at you, a hand in the air gesturing, she explained, “Well, think of it this way. Do you want to sit her down and just tell her how you feel, or do you want to take her out, and let it just happen?”

You grew confused further. “Ruby, you’re not making any sense.” She adjusted her seating and turned to face you. Holding up one hand, she said “Option one, you can ask her to come over, when you feel ready, of course, and hang out with her for a while. Then, tell her how you feel. Something along the lines of ‘I’m really glad that we’re friends, but I’d like to be more than friends’. We can come up with something better later. Given what you’ve told me about the flirting, there is no way she doesn’t like you back. It’ll officially start from there, you two will be together.” You nodded in understanding. “On the other hand,” She said, lifting up her other hand. “You could ask her out. Maybe to a fancy place. Wear a nice outfit, she’ll wear one too, you go get dinner together. Pay for the meal, and walk her back here. Stroll under the stars, and cuddle on a bench. When the moment’s right, lean in. That way, it’ll just, happen. You’ll be together.” Again, you nodded in understanding. “You’ll get the same result either way, you just have to choose how you want to go about it. Take her out, or tell her.” Ruby explained.

“You can choose what you want.”

You thought about it for a moment, unsure which one to pick.

Eventually, you came to a conclusion.

(A/n: So the end of this story is gonna be a bit complicated. There's one more chapter, but I couldn't decide on making the reader either sit Velvet down and tell her how they feel, or take Velvet out on a date. So I decided to do both. I'll at around the same time be publishing Chapters 7A and 7B. 7A will be the chapter where the reader sits Velvet down and tells her how they feel, and 7B will be the date. Kinda like a poorly written Choose Your Own Adventure. Look forward to that if you want, I guess. :P )
