Chapter 2 - Blushing Red Like Roses

The next morning, you practically sprang out of bed, although you weren't sure why. Maybe the alarm just happened to startle you that morning. At any rate, you got out of bed and got yourself dressed. Your teammates asked if you were okay. You thought back to yesterday, and decided to not explain the whole thing. It was too much of a hassle, especially at this hour. “I'm fine. Just had a long day is all. It happens.” You told them. They seemed okay with that answer as you got your things and headed to first period.

First period went by at a decent pace. Same for the next few. Lunch, or 6th period for you, rolled around soon enough. You headed to the cafeteria almost in rhythm to your music yet again. As you got there, you saw Ruby skipping for the door, with her big red headphones wrapped around her head. You sprinted forward and grabbed the door, and swung it open for her. Upon noticing this, Ruby removed a headphone from her ear and set it behind her ear slightly. “Hey, (Y/n)! Thanks!” She said aloud. She hopped into the room, and you followed suit, the door coming to a close behind you. After it shut, Ruby turned to you and asked “Hey! Do you wanna come sit with my team?” She held her pale hands to her chin and looked up at you, a sparkle in her eye. Before you answered, you thought of Yang. “Did something happen between you and Ruby?” She said in your head. “Pleeease?” Ruby begged, hopping and beginning to draw attention from one or two teams. Coco and Velvet from team CFVY were staring and whispering, but Coco was doing more of the pointing. Regardless, they both giggled to themselves. The other team, of course, was team RWBY. Weiss gave you that same eyebrow raise she had the other night, and Blake was too involved in her book to give more than a second’s attention to the two of you. Yang sat and stared, smiling, her head resting in her hand. “Well alright.” You said to Ruby. “Awesome! I'll take you to the table!” She said, grabbing your hand and pulling you with her. Your cheeks burned as she did this, but luckily she didn't see.

You could sure tell Yang saw though. That smug grin said enough.

Ruby sat down and patted on the seat next to her. “This might as well just happen.” You thought to yourself as you sat down next to Ruby. “You guys remember (Y/n)!” She said aloud, turning to face her team. Weiss simply said “Yes…” with that same eyebrow raise that only made you nervous she'd start thinking on the same track as Yang, who sarcastically said “Oh, yeah, of course I do.” You shot her an icy stare as she giggled to herself. Blake just said “Hey.” Without looking up from her book. Wanting to take the attention away from you and Ruby, you turned to Blake and asked her “Hey, what’s that book about?” She looked up, taken aback by your question. “Huh?”

“Your book. Does it have a name?”

“Um, it's about a man with four souls, all fighting for control over his body.”

“Ooh, interesting. You'll have to let me borrow it when you're finished.”

Blake shut the book and pulled it closer to her, almost hissing at you. You were taken aback, and you even shuffled in your seat a bit as her yellow eyes pierced your (e/c) ones.

“Blake doesn't like to share her books.” Ruby explained. “I'll try to talk her into giving you the first book in that series later if you want.” Blake quickly shifted her ferocious gaze to Ruby, who only laughed in response.

“So (Y/n),” Weiss asked you. “What classes are you taking this year?”

You all went on to have a great discussion about school and classes. You were friendly and made jokes with the entire team. Yang found you hilarious, and made some “jokes” of her own. Weiss was very interested in what you said about classes, but little else. Blake was wrapped up in her book, but occasionally threw herself into conversation for a moment.

Ruby enjoyed your company. She found you funny, and almost couldn't stop laughing at yours and Yang’s jokes. Yang would give you a look when she went into a short laughing fit, a look of sass and contempt. It deeply annoyed you, but you decided to keep making Ruby laugh in spite of it. “Making her laugh is more important than me not getting looks.” You thought.

The bell rang all too soon. You all got up and headed out of the cafeteria. “Hopefully these two periods fly by, I need the end of this day now.” You said to the team. “Ooh! (Y/n)!” Ruby said, springing onto your arm. “You doing anything after classes today?” You looked down to her clinging on your arm happily. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Weiss giving you that same eyebrow raise she had twice before. This time, she leaned to Yang and whispered something, you couldn't make it out. Yang responded, but again you didn't hear. Weiss was giving you a strange look now, one of confusion, but with a hint of enjoyment. You knew if you said yes, it would only provoke Yang, and maybe Weiss now, to believe that something was going on between you and Ruby.

But you couldn't say no to that face.

“Um, well, I don't think so. I'm free. You wanna hang out, don't you?”

A blush burned on your cheeks slightly, Yang noticed it and smiled, but this time it was a sweet smile. Weiss nodded in understanding. You weren't quite sure, but you began to think Ruby caught that blush in your cheeks, burning red like roses. She giggled and released you from her grip. “Well, you said we were gonna hang out at some point, let's do today!” She said happily. “Okay, I'll meet you in the park after classes let out.” You told her. She smiled and agreed. “Okay, I've gotta go to class. I'll see you after classes.” You said. Ruby gave you a hug goodbye. You blushed red again, but were too happy to care. You caught Yang giving you a look of annoyance after Ruby let you go, and you grew concerned as to why she sent it to you. You then went to class, and team RWBY to theirs.

That adorable grin Ruby had given you wa burned into your mind, but it wasn't a problem. Not for the first few moments. You felt your cheeks burn as you mentally relived that moment where she held your arm, and you were snapped back into reality when you realized there was a smile in between your burning cheeks.

You started to think you knew why Yang gave you that look.

    She was being protective.
